The InterContinental, Medellin, Columbia

This top class renovated hotel is where Royalty and Presidents stay when they visit the city of Medellin in Columbia, and I had the honour of staying there when the (now former) President of Columbia, Mr Uribes, and the Prince and Princess of Astoria (Spain) were there.

The hotel provides its guests with delightful gardens. The most beautiful hotel and set on a steep hillside, this establishment is finished to the highest standard, with marble floors and columns and walls in abundance.

It has the latest technology, including access to high-speed Internet in all rooms and wireless Internet in public areas. The property also features a lobby with 24-hour reception and check-out service, a hotel safe, currency exchange facilities, lift access, a hairdressing salon and a children's playground. Guests may dine in the restaurant and spend their evenings in the bar or disco. Business guests are sure to appreciate the conference facilities. Room and laundry services provide additional convenience.

Located in a residential area, the nearest city, Medellin, is located at a distance of 5 km in the lush district of 'The Village'. The road down to the city is quite steep and very twisted.  Medellin is known as the city of 'eternal spring' due to its location in a valley surrounded by mountains, although the highlights are the 'los paisas', the happy and friendly people. The hotel is a short drive away from the Museum of Antioquia, which houses the sculptures of world-renowned artist Fernando Botero.

Medellin is a perfect destination for those travelling on business or pleasure. The rooms, depending on their location, offer views of the city, the mountains or the recreational area. They have a complete and sophisticated security system, and are all equipped with a king-size bed, two direct dial telephone lines, voice-mail, Internet access, a minibar, an electronic safe and a work desk. They also provide individually regulated air conditioning, a TV with 60 satellite/cable channels, a radio and an en suite bathroom with a shower and hairdryer.Recreational facilities include a heated outdoor semi-Olympic swimming pool, 2 large and well-lit tennis courts, a mini-golf course, a jogging track, table tennis, basketball courts, volleyball and mini football. There is also a spa offering massages and beauty treatments (for a fee). Children can enjoy their own swimming area. Sun loungers and parasols are laid out for use. Active guests can join an aerobics class or work out in the gym. The hot tub and sauna ensure complete relaxation.
* Some services at an extra charge

Given its elevated position on the mountainside, this hotel overlooks the city of Medellin and at night time, the view is spectacular.  For extra comfort, it also offers two floors of Club InterContinental rooms, which provide special privileges such as private check-in and check-out, Club Lounge, happy hour, and private breakfast. Medellin is a top destination for both leisure and business travellers.

The reception staff are most helpful, and speak very good English, but most are multilingual.

Meals, especially breakfast, are most appetising.  The surroundings are most impressive.  Rooms are very large, extremely clean, and equipped with very modern facilities.  These are reached by a system of lifts, or escalators, which are large and clean.

Visit http://www.intercontinental.com/intercontinental/en/gb/locations/mdeha and get a better view of this hotel than I have given - indeed I could not do justice to this marvellous establishment in a few words.

Lusty Beg Hotel, Co. Fermanagh

Set in the heart of the County Fermanagh Lakelands, this hotel is located on a private 75 acre island paradise and offers the perfect blend of business, leisure and pleasure. It is accessed by a short ferry trip across Lough Erne, a feature in itself.  It is easily accessible to all parts of Co Fermanagh, and also to Co. Donegal in the neighbouring Republic of Ireland.

From the moment you step off the ferry you can be sure of a warm and friendly welcome. The waters of Lough Erne are to be seen from the hotel, and from most of the facilities on site.  The open fire in the entrance lounge is so full of the warmth that Northern Ireland is famous for providing. The specialist staff will be delighted to:
  • Help organise your stay:
  • Plan your family holiday or weekend break
  • Manage your conference and corporate events
  • Organise your activities Package
  • Plan your Wedding
The accommodation is just so different from anything you might have been in before.  There is a series of log cabins on site, and just a short walk from the main centre.  These are tastefully decorated and add atmosphere to any stay.  The rooms are so inviting and the decor is appropriate.

The food is something else. If you want a smacking good meal, this is the place to go to.

The conference facilities are also of a good standard, and staff are on hand should technical difficulties arise.

However, like its sibling the Lake District, you can be sure of some very good weather but also some very wet weather; so take good footwear and waterproof coats with you.

Holiday Inn, Sarajevo, Bosnia

Holiday Inn Sarajevo is located just a a little walk outside the city centre of Sarajevo, close to National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ali Pasha's Mosque, and Eternal Flame. It is a beautiful hotel that is 4*.  the massive and very high entrance hallway is most impressive, and staff are very helpful - no problem with English as staff are multilingual.  Nearby points of interest also include Serb Orthodox Cathedral and Cathedral of Jesus' Heart.

It was this hotel that the international media used during the Bosnian war of 1992-1995.

Dining options at Holiday Inn Sarajevo include a tremendous restaurant. The food is of very high quality, is tastefully presented, and pleasantly served.  Recreational amenities include an indoor pool and a sauna. This 4.0-star modern property offers small meeting or syndicate rooms and business services. Guest parking is complimentary. Additional property amenities include multilingual staff, gift shops/newsstands, and currency exchange.

The rooms are finished and fitted out to a very high standard.  Bathrooms feature baths and hair dryers. Televisions have satellite channels and pay movies. Rooms also include desks and irons/ironing boards. Beds for infant and rollaway beds are available on request.

A 15 minute walk will take the traveller into the city centre where there are many good restaurants, especially a steak house which is second to none.  There is a lively market there, and plenty to see.  The City still bears the marks of the 1992-95 war, and for the interested, there are tours around some of the notorious sites that were covered on the TV news channels.  The government building is close to the hotel, and the marks of war are still  visible on that tower block.

To get there, you will need to book your flight.  To help you secure the best price, visit this website. Just click the link and see what you can learn. This link will take into information that will help you get the best possible deal on your flights.

Hotel California, Palo Alto, California

This was a bed- or room-only establishment, where breakfast was served in a restaurant along the street, which was rather inconvenient.  The room was cramped, but adequate for the single traveller.

Palo Alto is close to the famous Stanford University.  I would not recommend this hotel, except perhaps for those travelling on a budget.  It lacks a communal area, and there is no dining room/area.

Hotel Bristol Stephanie, Brussels

Perhaps the most elegant and top class 4* hotel we ever stayed in - albeit for one night only.  The rooms are enormous, and the facilities superb.  Located on the trendy Avenue Louisa in Brussels, it is close to interesting places, such as the Palace de Justice, and a short walk to the Grande Place.  Close to this is the famous Mannikin Plas.

The Hotel is grande, and the entrance area most impressive, and atmospheric.  Meals were excellent.  Ideal for both the tourist and the business traveller.  Service superb.  Hotel has elegance twinned with comfort and luxury.  The lift to the upper floors looks a bit antiquated and is quite small and cramped.  However, it is well worth a stay, even for a few nights.

To enjoy this hotel, you will need to get there, and you'll want to fly there at the best possible price.  Visit this website to find out how you can buy your flights at the best prices.  Remember, if you can book cheap flights, you will have more money to spend on your visit to Brussels.  So go here right now, and get the surprise of your life!
